Northern New Mexico New Route Info
A big thank you to the Mountain Skills Guides who established most of these routes. Also Thanks to Mad Rock Climbing! Without thier many contributions many of these new routes would not have come to fruition. See Taos Rock for area maps and driving directions.Visit Mountainproject.com for more info and photos.
Strewn across a convoluted hillside riddled with sandy washes are the Rinconada Boulders, freestanding basalt blocks of all angles and grades featuring pockets, slopers, huecos and positive edges. Over fifty problems, V0 to V7, some a few minutes walk off the main road, and plenty more if you’re willing to hike farther.
Rinconada Boulders Driving Directions:
From Taos travel 16 miles south on NM 68 just past a large pullout with a green gate on the right look for a small turn to the left located .5 south of Taos County line, and .5 north of the town of Rinconada. Turn onto this small dirt road and park here. The first boulders are visible on the hillside two hundred yards from the car.
From Comales Take NM 75 and turn right onto NM 68 continue about 4 miles passing through Rinconada and look for small dirt road on left.
It is also possible to park at the large pullout on the road next to green gate. At the north end of parking cross the road, and hike the wash until it opens up and flattens (10 min.). You should see Turkey Face on the hill to the left and The Grotto below. For Monument Area continue up wash 50 meters. At a double track head left (north) to another wash. Turn right here and go100 meters.
Turkey Face Area
This is a great sunny and warm sector. Nice varnished basalt with slab, face, and steep problems of moderate grades. There are a few harder projects in the area waiting to be brushed.
